5 Ways to Stay Safe When Walking in the Dark  

1.     Wear Reflective Gear and Clothing

Wearing dark colors makes you harder to see when waking at night, so always plan to wear a bright color (yellows, whites, oranges) to make yourself more visible to the people around you. Wearing reflective gear is also highly suggested. Reflective gear such as a lighted bracelet or headlamp assures your visibility to people passing by, as well as any motor vehicles that may be traveling along your walking path. You can wear these reflective devices on your wrist, ankle, arm, or belt area, anywhere that can be seen to passersby is perfect for reflective gear.  

2.     Stay Alert to Your Surroundings

This rule we learned back when we were children, always look both ways, and keep your head up when walking. Especially if you are walking at night or early morning you want to be sure you are alert to your surroundings. Keep your music low in your headphones (if you wear them) to assure that you can hear oncoming traffic, or any animals that may be in the surrounding area. Living in Florida one animal we come in contact the most is alligators. Alligators feed mostly at night and when it is dark when the temperature drops the most. Alligators have a distinct hiss and can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour, so be sure to carry a flashlight and avoid areas where they are commonly known to inhabit (ponds, brush, waterways).

3.     Stick to Sidewalks and Dedicated Walking Paths

When walking in the dark be sure to stick to dedicated walking paths and sidewalks and avoid walking in the roadway. Even with reflective gear, walking in the roadway in the dark puts you at risk of a distracted or tired motorist, so stick to the sidewalks and leave the roads for motorists and bicyclists.

4.     Let Someone Know Where You’re Going

Always alert someone when you are leaving, and your anticipated time of return, and where you are intending on going. This ensures that if you do not return at the specific time arranged, the person knows where you were heading and the path you generally take. Thus, making you easy to find in the chance of an emergency when timing is of the essence.

5.     Have a Safety Plan

Having a safety plan correlates to all the above, but with one major addition. Always, have a backup plan. If you always take one route, plan out an alternate path to take in case of an emergency or obstacle. Never try to cross rushing water or bypass animals you’re not familiar with. Also, be alert to the people around you and always trust your gut! If you feel uneasy, or threatened, move to the other side of the sidewalk and get yourself to a place where you feel safe. If you don’t feel safe, always call 911, they would rather you call to ease your mind than possibly end up in a nefarious situation. For a safety plan it is recommended to do the following: carry a cell phone at all times, keep your ID on you, keep a small amount of cash on you just in case you need to get a ride home, and have emergency contact information stored in your phone that can easily be accessed by medical professionals, or a good Samaritan.
